French I

French I is designed for students who have had some French in the Middle School.Ìý It provides a re-introduction of the basic structures of French with intensive work on speaking, writing, understanding and listening designed to prepare students to take French II. The course focuses on the language for everyday purposes, such as introducing oneself, greeting people, making plans, ordering food, asking for and giving simple information. Students are taught to ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics. Students should be able to comprehend and write very short, simple texts on familiar topics. To provide a framework for such communication, the course introduces basic grammatical structures.

FrenchÌýII Ìý

French II course is designed to help students attain a level of proficiency that should allow them to function comfortably in a French-speaking environment. Students are expected to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and learn to communicate in culturally appropriate ways. This course provides students with the opportunity to practice certain topic areas orally and in writing. Among these areas are expressing feelings, giving personal information, talking about their interests, describing dream houses and family members and events. Additionally, students will continue to learn the basics of French grammar: verbs, prepositions, sentence structure, etc. They also learn certain sentence structures and phrases that enable them to describe past experiences, give advice, express likes and dislikes, etc.

FrenchÌýIII Ìý

This course is designed to promote advanced-level speaking and writing skills. It offers extensive practice with varied language structures, styles of expression and textual forms. It will also help students better understand contemporary French culture, thought and modes of expression. This course has increased emphasis on grammatical exactness to further develop communicative proficiency. Students will move on to more advanced grammar that will improve their writing skills. Students are also introduced to selected texts from French literature; emphasis will be on close reading of texts and being able to answer comprehension questions on them.Ìý
